According to Hindu mythology, Lord Krishna who was the 8th son of Devaki and Vasudev was born on the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadon. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birthday of one of the most powerful human incarnations of Lord Vishnu, Lord Krishna. Originally Janmashtami is celebrated at midnight with devotional songs, arti and puja to praise the mighty Krishna’s appearance.

The Hindu festival Krishna Janmashtami or Gokulashtami is celebrated worldwide. Dahi Handi is one special event related to this auspicious day. This sport takes place one day after Krishna Janmashtami. In this sport, the Dahi handi, earthen pot filled with milk or yogurt is hung at a height that is seemingly difficult to reach. People try to look for creative ways to steal that handi or pot resembling episodes of Krishna’s childhood when he used to steal butter that his mother made. The young men make a human pyramid and try to reach the pot and break it amidst cheering crowd.
